Man-to-Man Defense Drill Descriptions

 1. Mirror Drill

  • Purpose: Teach defensive footwork, agility, and reaction.

  • Setup: Pair up players. One is the leader, the other mirrors.

  • Action: The leader moves laterally, forward, and backward. The defender mirrors all movements without crossing feet.

  • Coaching Points: Stay low, keep hands active, maintain stance. Encourage communication: “slide left/right.”


2. Defensive Slide Lines

  • Purpose: Build lateral quickness, balance, and defensive endurance.

  • Setup: Players line up on baseline or sideline.

  • Action: Slide from baseline to sideline and back in defensive stance without crossing feet.

  • Coaching Points: Stay low, chest up, hands active. Emphasize short, quick steps.


3. Closeout & Contest Drill

  • Purpose: Improve closing out on shooters while maintaining balance.

  • Setup: Coach or player passes ball to perimeter shooter; defender starts 10–15 feet away.

  • Action: Defender sprints to shooter, breaks down in controlled steps, contests shot with hands up, does not foul.

  • Coaching Points: Emphasize proper footwork and body control. Recover quickly if shooter passes or drives.


4. 1-on-1 Full Court

  • Purpose: Improve on-ball pressure, stance, and footwork.

  • Setup: One offensive player, one defender. Start full court.

  • Action: Offensive player tries to advance; defender applies pressure, forces weak hand, prevents easy basket.

  • Coaching Points: Force direction, maintain stance, communicate. Rotate players to experience multiple offensive styles.


5. Closeout-to-1-on-1 Drill

  • Purpose: Combine closing out with immediate defensive pressure.

  • Setup: Offensive player receives ball 15–20 feet from defender.

  • Action: Defender closes out to contest, then immediately transitions into on-ball defense.

  • Coaching Points: Short choppy steps, hands up, force ball handler baseline or weak hand.


6. Lane Touch Drill (Everyone Engages Cutters)

  • Purpose: Teach defenders to anticipate and contest every cutter through the lane.

  • Setup: 4–5 offensive players cut continuously through the lane; defenders are on perimeter and in lane.

  • Action: Each defender must make physical or visual contact with the cutter (reach hand, bump shoulder, guide direction). Rotate defenders to experience multiple angles.

  • Coaching Points: All defenders must react; communicate loudly. Recover quickly after contact.


7. Deny & Recover Drill

  • Purpose: Train defenders to deny passes while maintaining defensive coverage.

  • Setup: Offensive player positioned on wing or corner. Defender guards them.

  • Action: Defender denies pass by maintaining proper stance and hand position. If ball moves, defender recovers to stay between man and basket.

  • Coaching Points: Maintain balance, stay alert, anticipate ball movement.


8. Shell Drill (with Cuts)

  • Purpose: Integrate on-ball, help-side, off-ball defense, and cutting awareness.

  • Setup: 4 offense vs 4 defense. Ball starts on perimeter.

  • Action: Defense rotates as ball moves. Off-ball players practice cutting, backdoor, and offensive movement. Defenders engage cutters and rotate accordingly.

  • Coaching Points: Communication is key. Maintain proper gap responsibility. Contest cutters.


9. 2-on-2 Closeout & Help Drill

  • Purpose: Teach help-side rotation and closeout responsibilities.

  • Setup: 2 offense vs 2 defense. One defender pressures ball; the other helps off-ball.

  • Action: Ball defender pressures; help defender moves to cover paint or ball side as needed. Rotate after each play.

  • Coaching Points: Emphasize proper help angles, recovery, and communication.


10. Shell Drill with Rotations

  • Purpose: Reinforce rotations, weak-side help, and closeouts.

  • Setup: 4 offense vs 4 defense (or 5-on-5). Ball starts on perimeter.

  • Action: Defenders rotate as ball moves; weak-side rotates to help or cover open players; on-ball defender applies pressure.

  • Coaching Points: Communicate screens, cuts, and ball movement. Slide as a unit, maintain stance.


11. Closeout + Rotate Drill

  • Purpose: Combine closing out on ball with immediate rotation.

  • Setup: Perimeter ball handler and 2–3 defenders.

  • Action: One defender closes out to the ball, others rotate to cover open spots. Drill simulates ball reversal or skip pass.

  • Coaching Points: Quick footwork, communicate, recover to your assignment after rotation.


12. 2-on-1 Trap Drill

  • Purpose: Teach trapping angles and timing.

  • Setup: Two defenders, one offensive player.

  • Action: Offensive player dribbles toward trap area; defenders close angles and force ball away from basket. Rotate defenders after each repetition.

  • Coaching Points: Force sideline/baseline, hands active, communicate “trap!”


13. Sideline Trap Drill

  • Purpose: Teach full-court and half-court sideline trapping.

  • Setup: Ball handler on sideline, 2 defenders nearby, 1–2 help-side defenders ready.

  • Action: Apply trap along sideline; weak-side defenders rotate to cover open offensive players.

  • Coaching Points: Timing, trap angles, and quick rotations are critical.


14. Continuous Trap Game

  • Purpose: Apply traps in competitive setting.

  • Setup: 4-on-4 offense vs defense in half-court.

  • Action: Defense applies traps every possession; coach points out proper rotations and trap timing.

  • Coaching Points: Emphasize communication and recovery if trap fails.


15. Competitive Small-Sided Games

  • Examples & Purpose:

  1. 4-on-4 Rotation Game: Defense scores points for proper rotations, weak-side help, or denying passes.

  2. Trap + Recover Game: Defense traps ball and recovers to cover open players.

  3. 5-on-5 Controlled Scrimmage: Coach stops play to correct rotations, help-side, and cutters.

Coaching Points: Encourage intensity, communication, and proper technique. Make it competitive and rewarding.
