Post Movement

I'd like to spend a bit of time discussing different post rotations.  Post rotations are how the post players will be lining up and moving during an offensive set.  Most of the offenses I like to run consist of 2 post players and I generally like to have the 2 players occupy the high post and the low post at any point in time.  I also like to have the high post be a safety valve when the perimeter players require it or to be that 4th player on the perimeter when the team is facing an odd man zone (ie. 1-2-2/3-2/1-3-1) and the offense needs to line up on the gaps accordingly.

Because of movement and our rotations we don't hog tie our bigs into who the 4 or the 5 will be.  We like to be more flexible as movement and rotation will determine who the high post and who the low post will be at any given time.  Since this is the case, our bigs need to have flexibility.  They need to know how to do the following:
  • Post
  • Seal
  • Pass on the interior
  • Set screens
  • Use screens
  • Pass on the perimeter
  • Handle the ball
  • Shoot the outside shot
  • Drive to the basket
  • Offensive Rebound
This system requires our bigs to be our best all around players. Over the next week we will be discussing the basic patterns that we like to have our bigs follow during our sets.  These are basic patterns that we teach at the beginning of the year which give our players an idea of what we want.  As the year goes on and the players get to know each other we encourage them to add some creativity to the scheme as long as some general rules are followed:
  1. Never have our 2 bigs line up within 5 feet of each other.  Interior spacing is important.  We like to maintain 10-12 feet of space on the interior.
  2. If you're not open then move and let the next man fill in.  We teach the 2 second rule.  If you don't get it in 2 seconds then move and replace.
  3. Always try to make yourself available especially if a teammate is in trouble.
The 3 patterns which seem to fit in with the different ways we like to start our offenses are described below.
  • 1-4 High - Our 2 post players begin at the either elbow of the free throw line.
  • 1-4 Low - Our 2 post players begin at either side of the low block.
  • High/Low - Our post players begin with one on the high post and one on the low post.
Stay tuned.
