The Offseason - The Window for Improvement

The word offseason is a misnomer for people that want to improve their game.  A better phrase for the months of the year when there are no games would be "the window for improvement."  This is the time of year where you get the chance to gain an edge on your competition.  All of the greats use this time of year to fine tune their body and their game.  It is a fine balance between making sure you get enough rest to recharge your batteries for the upcoming season and including enough time in the gym to work on your game and your body while maintaining a good nutritional plan.

For many kids who excel in the game, they are often busy in the summer playing in AAU tournaments.  This keeps kids playing all year round but keeps them from finding the time they need to improve their game.  For them there is no offseason and if they do have some time off they would rather relax a bit and get away from the grind (don't blame them).

To me the offseason is as valuable as the season is because it is during the off season where players will get better.  It is the offseason that gives them the chance to gain the edge a competitor is always  looking for.  I would rather kids not play over the summer but spend it fine tuning their basketball skills and conditioning.  I would prefer kids attend good camps that stress the fundamentals as opposed to spending their summer playing organized games.  Notice how I said organized games.  There's nothing wrong with going out and looking for good pick up games to play over the summer.  You can use these games as an opportunity to try out the new moves or skills you are practicing against live competition.  Just remember not to over do it.  Don't sacrifice skills, conditioning, and coordination training for games in the summer.

In conclusion, take advantage of the offseason.  Use the time wisely as it truly is the window for improvement.  It is the time which will allow dedicated players to add facets to their game.
