Offensive Starts

Coaches spend a lot of time teaching each practice teaching offense.  One of the most important items which need to be taught is what I call Offensive starts.  What are offensive starts?  The are the wrinkles that you will need to add to your offense to help you get things started.  Against a basic zone you may not need to use any of these.  However against a solid man to man you will need to show your team a number of options they can use to get the offense started.  The six that I like to teach my team at a basic level are:
  1. V-cuts
  2. L-cuts
  3. Pin downs
  4. Backdoors
  5. Dribble At
  6. Dribble Handoff
V-cuts
V-cuts have been covered before here.  We won't dive into the concept again but will say that this is one of the most basic yet most effective ways to get open against a tough man to man.

L-cuts
L-cuts have been covered before here.  This is a nice alternative to the V-cut and should be used by people playing the wings on offense regularly.

Pin Downs
Pin downs have been covered before here.  This is another nice alternative to the V-cut and L-cut and should be included in any wing players arsenal in terms of getting open.

Backdoors
Backdoors are a great tool to use against a team that is overplaying your wings aggressively.

Dribble At
The dribble at is a good way for you to start the offense.  Instead of the point guard passing to a wing to start the offense, he'll dribble to the wing spot and replace him.  There are variations that you can use regarding what you will do with the wing who is being replaced.

Dribble Handoff
The last option that I like to use is the dribble handoff.  This is a nice play to use because it is difficult to defend against.
