1v1 Progressions

Continuing our focus on 1v1 play, today I've decided to lay out progressions to help players improve their 1v1 skills.

Dribble Drives

  1. Square up to the man covering you.  You will not be effective until you feel comfortable in the triple threat position while under pressure.  Players need to realize that the best way to beat a man that is covering you is to square him up and get him off balance.

  2. Direct path to basket - we need to teach players that when you make your move to the basket don't go around the person covering, but rather go by him. Eat up the space between the defender and you as quickly as possible. The quicker you get to his hip the better.

  3. Attack forward leg - If you see a defender not playing you straight up but he/she is rather trying to force you in a certain direction, try to attack the front foot. This is the best path to take when the defender's front foot is even with your body or into your body. If the defender has the outside foot beyond your body it is better to attack him/her to the back leg side as he/she is not playing you in a balanced defensive position. Of course when a defender is forcing you to take a side you always need to consider where the help is coming from as there is usually reason he is covering you the way he is.

  4. Shoulder to Hip (SHIP) - The key to beating a defender 1 v 1 is to get into his hip in a low, close to the ground manner.

  5. Rip to SHIP - We are now adding moves to throw a defender off balance.

  6. Double Rip to SHIP

  7. Jab to rip to SHIP

  8. Ball fake to SHIP

  9. Dribble fake to crossover to SHIP

Countermoves - moves to use when you dribble drive by your defender but haven't been able to get him on your hip.

  1. Crossover and switch direction

  2. Pull up and step back

  3. Spin move

Create separation - used when trying to get some space for your jump shot.

  1. Rip and pop

  2. Jab, rip, and pop

  3. Jab, rip, bounce, and step back

We will take a look at all of these with some videos showing pros in action doing the above mentioned moves.
