Types of Rip Moves

In basketball the rip is one of the moves that all players should get into the habit of using.  This move allows the person with the ball an opportunity to create space when being guarded closely and can also allow that person to begin a drive by the defender who is covering them.  The are 3 types of rip moves and all 3 can be effective when properly used.
Before we get started with the 3 types of rip moves let's spend some time talking about what the ball handler should be doing in order to effectively use a rip.
  1. Be in triple threat position.  As an offensive player in this position you are ready to attack using one of 3 options: pass, drive, and shoot.
  2. Be prepared to use your jab steps and pivots along with the rip.  These moves in combination with the rip can increase your chances of a successful blow by.
  3. Be comfortable pivoting using either leg and be prepared to drive using either hand.  Let the defenders position determine where you're going to attack not your comfort level with dribbling or pivoting.
As we mentioned earlier there are 3 different types of rips:
  1. High Rip - This move is used when you are being guarded by a smaller defender.  The rip will be with the ball above the shoulders with both hands firmly on the ball.  The move can occur either left to right or vice versa.  The rip should be quick, almost violent.
  2. Mid rip - This move is used when you are being guarded by a shorter or equal height defender.  With this move you will be moving the ball from left to right or vice versa through the middle of your body.  The key to this rip is to avoid exposing the ball to the defender covering you.  As you do the rip the ball should be very close to your body and held firmly.  The move should be done quickly almost violently.
  3. Low Rip - The low rip is used against a taller defender or against a defender who may be too tall in his defensive stance.  To effectively run this rip you need to move the ball from left to right or vice versa with the ball going below your knees and almost touching the floor if possible.  Again the move should be quick and almost violent in nature with both hands firmly on the ball.
So there you have it, the rip move is a very effective tool to use when you need to create space and begin a move against a defender who is closely guarding you.  Here at TBL we will have more on this move in the future and how you can use it in combination with pivots and jab steps to help improve your blow by game.
