Basic Screens

Here at TBL we're all about the details involved in making this game beautiful.  Another important topic which may not be glamorous at first glance but is very important to the game of basketball is screening.  As a matter of fact, the farther you move up the basketball ladder the more exposure you will get to screens. There are 4 types of basic screens in basketball.  Everything else that is done in an offensive sequence builds off of these 4 screens.

The 4 basic basketball screens:
  1. Down Screen
  2. Back Screen
  3. Side Screen
  4. Ball Screen
Down Screen - This screen is a vertical screen which calls for a  player to move towards their own basket and screen for a teammate who starts close to the basket and will generally move away from the basket to receive the ball.

Down Screen
Back Screen - This screen is another vertical screen but is opposite the down screen.  With this screen the player who is close to the basket will come out and screen for a perimeter player who will then cut towards the basket.

Back Screen
Side Screen - This screen is a horizontal screen and is generally a screen which is made between post players.  This screen can also be used by perimeter players who are replacing each other.

Ball Screen - This is also know as the pick n roll and is the most well known play in basketball.  As a matter of fact when you watch the NBA you will notice that a lot of the offensive sets that are run involve the ball screen.  In it's most basic form, the ball screen involves an offensive player setting a screen for the player who has the ball.  There are a lot of options that both the screener and the ball handler have when running a ball screen and that will be a subject to be discussed in another post.
